Part of the £100 million Gatwick Airport expansion program was to build a connecting bridge between pier 4 and pier 6 to provide a pedestrian link for passengers, with travelators and walkways in both directions, and a glazed façade giving passengers unique and spectacular views across the airfield.
Moving the bridge into place at the busiest single runway international airport in the world posed a significant logistical challenge. The prefabricated bridge was assembled on a site on the north west boundary of the airfield and transported 1.5km to the Pier 6 site on the airport itself by SMPT's (self propelled modular trailers). The 2,600 tonne structure was then lifted into position, before the addition of two Y-shaped pylons to support the structure.

Structure type:
Trapezoidal spined Bridge
Project Title: Gatwick Pier 4 - 6 Connector Bridge
Steel Fabricator/erector: Watson Steel
Client: British Airports Authority
Main Contractor: Mace
